Fought in the winter of 1540-1541, the Tiguex War pitted Francisco Vazquez de Coronado's expedition and its Mexican Indian allies against the Tiwa Pueblos of the middle Rio Grande; it is considered the first named war between Europeans and Native Americans in what is now the United States, leaving hundreds of Puebloans dead.
