Wairau Affray

1843 · Ngāti Toa (Te Rauparaha, Te Rangihaeata) vs New Zealand Company settlers

Also called the Wairau Massacre, this clash on 17 June 1843 in the Wairau Valley was the first serious armed confrontation between British settlers and Māori after the Treaty of Waitangi. A New Zealand Company survey party attempting to arrest Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata was routed, with most settler deaths occurring after surrender.
