A nationwide civil war in New Granada (modern Colombia), 1839-1842, sparked by a religious uprising in Pasto and the ambitions of regional caudillos calling themselves jefes supremos against President Jose Ignacio de Marquez. It was one of the first major civil wars of independent Colombia.
