Mughal Empire (Late)
A Persianate, Central Asian Islamic dynasty that ruled most of the Indian subcontinent for two centuries.
What it was
Founded by Babur in 1526, the Mughals built a syncretic Indo-Islamic civilization whose monuments — the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, Fatehpur Sikri — still define what most non-Indians picture when they imagine "India". British conquest in the 18th and 19th centuries reduced them to figureheads before the East India Company finally abolished the throne in 1858.
Why it mattered
The Mughal land-revenue system was inherited largely intact by the British Raj, and Mughal Persian remained the official language of north Indian courts and bureaucracy until the 1830s.
From Wikipedia
The Mughal Empire was an early modern empire in South Asia. At its peak, the empire stretched from the outer fringes of the Indus River Basin in the west, northern Afghanistan in the northwest, and Kashmir in the north, to the highlands of present-day Assam and Bangladesh in the east, and the uplands of the Deccan Plateau in South India.
