What happened
The Ottoman siege of Vienna (1683) marked Ottoman final attempt at European conquest. Christian relief forces defeated Ottomans at Vienna. Subsequent Christian campaigns recovered Ottoman territories. Peace of Karlowitz (1699) established Christian dominance.
Why it mattered
Great Turkish War reversed Ottoman European expansion. The outcome presaged Ottoman decline as a European power.
